Robby Jerzee Recap: Steeler DC Dick LeBeau Won The Game with a Great Gameplan

Met Life Stadium: East Rutherford, New Jersey-

The Jets lost their first home game of the year to the Steelers 19-6. The chess match between New York Jets Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and Pittsburgh Steelers Defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau was won by the defense minded coach. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger played a good game. Although he was rushed hit hard at times, he had no interceptions and only 7 incomplete passes on his way to a 23/30 day.

The Jets defense did their job with a injured secondary. CB Antonio Cromartie got beat on a touchdown, but it’s possible that his injury affected him. They only gave up 19 points with a goal line stand.

New York Jets Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg has to play to Geno Smith’s strenghs. He needs to let the kid throw deep more than once on design plays. That will open the run game and the safety will play back more. I like the run game helping out Smith in the beginning of game to settle him in. Sprinkling a deep pass in would have a great effect.

Ben Roethlisberger 23/30 264 yards, 1 TD, 76% completion.

1ST Quarter:

The Jets defense was being aggressive and controlling the trenches. The Steelers were forced to punt on the first two series. The Jets defense missed a big opportunity on a missed sack in the end zone.

It’s 1st and 14 with the ball on the 2 yard line of Steelers. Roethlisberger gets caught in the end zone by Jets Muhammad Wilkerson and he slips out and throws an incomplete pass intended for Emmanuel Sanders. The Jets’ Wilkerson missed a safety, as he had the quarterback in his hands. With the Steelers throwing a lot of screens, the Jets pass rush is obviously the reason.

The Jets offense on their second series moved the ball. Thanks to a great punt return by Jeremy Kerley for 13 yards to the Steelers 45 yard line. So they start off in excellent field position.

Starting at Steelers 45 yard line, and this drive only created 3 points. In my preview I said you have to score touchdown to beat the Steelers.

Bilal Powell pounded the ball and played great in this drive. It started out with a Powell rush for 10 yards. Then on 3rd and 5, QB Smith pass to Powell for 9 yards and takes the ball to the Steelers 11 yard line. A couple plays later Powell rush up the middle for 5 yards to set up the field goal.

So Powell gets the calls on 3rd and 1 on the one yard line. He rushed up the middle and gets stuffed for no gain.

Jets kicker Nick Folk boots a 25 yard field goal.

Jets 3-0

The last series of the quarter for the Steelers they moved the ball. The Jets Wilkerson was still giving the Steelers offense line problems. Wilkerson was being held by Steelers Kelvin Beachum and got a 10 yards penalty.

So it was 3rd and 15 and looked like the Steelers were facing their 3rd drive end in a punt.Roethlisberger throws a quick screen pass to Antonio Brown and he picks up 16 yards for first down. A huge play gave the Steelers offense life.

The next play Jets LB Garrett McIntyre sacks Roethlisberger for a 8 yard loss.

2nd Quarter:

Continuing the drive from the end of 1st quarter. Ben Roethlisberger showed his toughness, he got sacked twice on this drive by Leger Douzable and Calvin Pace.

Roethlisberger had a big pass to Heath Miller for 31 yards over Jets CB Darrin Walls. Then on a 3rd and 13 play the Steelers came up short, but were in long field goal range. Steelers kicker tied the game with Shaun Suisham 46 yard field goal.

The Steelers defense got pressure on Jets QB Geno Smith and forced the Jets to punt on two drives. The two drives ended in a result of sacks on Smith.Steelers Jason Worilds and LaMarr Woodley both got sacks on 2 different drives.

The Steelers take advantage of their defense play.Roethlisberger pass to Heath Miller for 16 yards and  to Emmanuel Sanders for 13 yards. This put the ball on the 50 yard line. They then went to tricky plays.

WR Antonio Brown pass to Felix Jones for 15 yards to set up a field goal. Steelers Suisham 33 yard field goal to take the lead.

The next series the Jets came close to touchdown pass. Geno Smith incomplete pass deep in the middle of the field intended for Stephen Hill. The pass was 1 yard too far from Hill and Jets gave the ball back to Steelers.

The quarter was wrapping up about 3 minutes remaining. The Antonio Brown show began and he hurting the Jets in the secondary. Roethlisberger passes to Brown for 15 yards gets ball to mid field. That was a big play on 3rd and 10. Then Brown catches 11 yards and 7 yards to help set up another field goal.

Steelers kicker Suisham hits a 48-yarder to make it 9-3 Steelers with 45 seconds left in half.

While the Steelers were moving the ball and kicking field goals. Jets Santonio Holmes on the sideline, standing right next to QB Geno Smith and Marty talk things. The Jets are going try score in the next 45 seconds.

The 45 second drive starts with a draw play to Goodson for 6 yards.Geno Smith pass to the middle of the field to Jeremy Kerley for 10 yards. The next 2 passes are to the sidelines and completed perfectly played. WR Clyde Gates caught both passes for 7 yards and 8 yards.

Smith pass to Stephen Hill for 20 yards, beat Steelers Troy Polamalu on the play getting the ball to the Steelers 21 yard line. Polamalu just light up Hill near the sideline after that catch.

Jets Kicker Folk’s 39-yard field goal makes it 9-6 Steelers halftime.

Marty Lyons gets honored at halftime and now in the JETS RING OF HONOR. Great member of Jets sacks exchange.

3rd Quarter

The Steelers take over after a Jets 3 and out.

It’s 3rd and 1 and Roethlisberger throws a pass Emmanuel Sanders for 55-yard touchdown. Cromartie played him to close and got burned on a move that found Sanders wide open. It was a play action and the Jets safety took the bait of a run.

According to Newsday Greg Logan Cromartie said this about the play,

It looked at first as though Cromartie bit on the play fake, but he said that wasn’t the case.

“No, we were in cover zero , so I’m not worried about the play fake,” Cromartie said. “I’m thinking more about a quick [pass] because of cover zero, thinking the ball will come out a little quicker. But it ended up they had time to get the ball down the field.”

The Steelers are now in control 16-6, how will the Jets respond?

The next series its 2nd and 9 and QB Smith pass to Jeff Cumberland for 29 yards and gets ball to the Steelers 46 yard line. Then they pound the ball on the ground with Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell. Then Smith threw the ball in triple-coverage pass intended for Konrad Reuland and Steelers Ryan Clark intercepted the pass. The pick was a huge play cause the Jets were 3 yards from the red zone. The Jets lost the ball and points and still down by 10 points.

The Jets defense needs make a big play after the turnover. They get the Steelers in a 3rd down and 7 Roethlisberger pass is tip and Demario Davis just missed an interception diving for it. That play describe the whole day close to a big play ,but just missed it. The good thing is Steelers drive ended and the Steelers get no points off QB Smith turnover.

Jets offense struggling and have another 3 and out. The Steelers moving the ball before end of 3rd quarter. Roethlisberger pass to Antonio Brown for 14 yards. Then a huge pass to put the Steelers in red zone to TE Heath Miller for 22 yards put the ball on the Jets 12 yard line.

4TH Quarter:

Roethlisberger picks up the first down on the ground, he lowered his head and got the extra yard.He puts his team on 2 yard line and first goal. The Steelers run the next play hand the ball to Le’Veon Bell and Jets Damon Harrison blows the play up for a 2 yard loss.Do the Jets have another goal line stand in them?

Steelers going backwards after a holding call by Steelers Kelvin Beachum for a 10 yards. So its 3rd and 7 the Steelers go back to a trickier play Antonio Brown try to pass the ball. Jets David Harris sacks him for a 7 yard loss and they settle for a field goal.

The Jets stumble the rest of the quarter and at 4:49 left in the quarter. The Jets offense got the ball in the red zone still down 19-6.

Smith made passes to Hill for 13 yards. He got the ball to Cumberland for 14 yards and got the ball to the Steelers 41 yard line.

Then the Jets ran a draw play to Goodson and he rushed the ball for 18 yards. Smith passes the ball to  David Nelson for 11 yards getting the ball on Steelers 12 yard line.

Now the Jets are moving, not so much. The next play ends the game Smith gets hit and throws ball off-balance Steelers Lawrence Timmons picks him off.
