Vick Replaces Geno as the Starting QB; Future Remains Cloudy

New York Jets-

The New York Jets are going to start Michael Vick in Week 9 against the Kansas City, coach Rex Ryan said Monday. Vick is age 34 and has a one-year contract. He will get a chance to be a starting quarterback in the NFL again.

According to Star Ledger Darryl Slater writer,

Rex Ryan on Naming Vick Starter:

“This is not looking long term,” said Ryan. “This is about the immediate. My focus is just on that. That’s on Kansas City and trying to find a way to get a win. That’s why this decision was made. I’m not looking past this week (with who will start at quarterback).

“When Mike came in the game, I thought it did give us a spark,” Ryan said. “I felt the energy on the sideline. I think given an opportunity that he really hasn’t been given, which is to really run with the first team all week (in practice), that we’ll see how it plays out.”

Vick Will Face his Old Coach, Andy Reid:

The Chiefs are 4-3 this season with Head Coach Andy Reid. Vick will try to snap the Jets’ seven-game losing streak against Reid’s team. Vick played for Reid while he was head coach of the Eagles. Reid was the one that took a chance on Vick after he was released from federal prison for running a dog-fighting ring.

Vick on Reid:

“I love Andy Reid for the man that he is,” Vick said. “As far as the football game, football is football. I just want to go out there and do what’s best for the team and hopefully try to get a win. But it is kind of ironic that the first chance I get to start is against my former coach. Would I have wanted it that way? No, honestly. But it is what it is. It’s a great opportunity and I just have to try to take full advantage of it.”

The Fall of Geno Smith:

Geno Smith has only 24 games in his NFL starting career. He may be nearing a career as a back-up or out of the NFL. Smith has a big red flag of 37 turnovers, and 31 are picks. He’s only passed for 19 touchdowns, adding 7 rushing touchdowns.

Smith suffered a minor sprain to his right (throwing) shoulder against the Bills. It is uncertain if he will be active to even be a back-up. The Jets told practice squad quarterback Matt Simms to be prepared for promotion to the active roster.

Rex Ryan on Smith’s Shoulder:

“It doesn’t seem to be a serious injury, but there is an injury to (Smith’s) shoulder, so it’s not 100 percent right now,” Ryan said. “Hopefully, he’ll be able to throw the football on Wednesday. I’m not so sure he could do it right now.”
