The Bengals team has battled injury and adversity this season, at time coming out triumphant, at times not. Nevertheless, all of it has led to the team becoming more and more of the family that it is, including players and coaches alike, no matter the significance of role.
Both Kicker Mike Nugent and Hue Jackson lost their fathers this week. Nugent’s passed suddenly on Monday night, after which he was excused for the week’s practices. He was reportedly allowed to miss the game against the Browns today, but after he got some practice in last week, he felt that he should play.
I didn’t want to go a week without kicking,” Nugent said. “The kicker has to be the closer.”
And close he did. Nugent hit two separate 44-yard field goals, and then a 34-yarder to end his 3-for-3 day, and he’s now gone 11-for-11 since his chip shot miss at Carolina. That’s how you deal with adversity.
After the news broke about Nugent’s father, it was made known via Cincy Jungle that Offensive Coordinator Hue Jackson’s father also passed.
Being forced to deal with the tragic news, both did their very best to make their respective Dads proud in the shut-out win against the Cleveland Browns. Obviously, none were more deserving of the game balls, given the circumstances.
Prayers go out to these two men from the Bengals family.
