Overview: Jameis Winston is a red shirt sophomore from Florida State. In 2013, during his freshman year at Florida State he became the second quarterback in history to win the Heisman Trophy his freshman year. Winston will enter the draft with a college career of 7,964 passing yards, 65 touchdowns, and a 66% quarterback completion rating.
Strengths: A talented quarterback that has experience playing in a all pro offense. A mentality tough and strong quarterback. Strong arm. A confident player. Athletic. Posses great footwork can use his feet when needed. Hard to sack and take down due to his large frame. Very comfortable inside the pocket.
Weaknesses: Off-field issues are a major concern. Decision making is questionable. At times makes poor decisions when being pressured. At times can stare down receivers before releasing the ball.
My NFL Comparison: Steeler’s quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Why Roethlisberger? Both Winston and Roethlisberger have similar body structures and skill sets. Like Roethlisberger, Winston is hard for defenders to take him down due to his large frame. Another similar comparison Jameis has to Ben, is that he is athletic and uses his leg’s when necessary in order to gain yardage.
Projected Round (2015): There are a lot of quarterback needy teams in this year’s draft. I project Winston to be an early first round pick.
Bottom Line: Dispute his off-field issues in the past, Winston has the skills and talent that team’s are looking for in a starting quarterback. Jameis has the tools and talent to take it to the next level. A team that is in need of a starting quarterback/franchise quarterback will strongly consider drafting Winston, however he must convince NFL teams that he has matured and will not be a problem going forward.
