Evaluating Jets UDFA Linebacker Julian Howsare

Overview: Julian Howsare is a linebacker from Clarion University, who is currently on the New York Jets. While attending college, he was a team captain for his football team on and off the field. During his college career he had 170 tackles, 28 sacks, and 2 interceptions.

Strengths: Strong worth ethic. Durable. Ideal size at the position. Fast, explosive, has a great first step. Great strength. Versatile, can play defensive end, outside linebacker, inside linebacker and can also contribute on special teams. Great at blocking punts. Knows how to get the quarterback. Great motor. Athletic. Good instincts, a smart football player.

Weaknesses: There is some stiffness to his game. He played for a small school, level of competition is questionable.

The case why he would fit the New York Jets: Julian Howsare is a versatile football player who can play an integral role on the Jets defense. Adding Howsare would provide much needed depth at the linebacker position. One skill he has that will help him earn a spot is the ability to play on special teams. The Jets could use more help and play makers on special teams, and he can easily contribute. Currently, Howsare is listed as an outside linebacker for the Jets, his great pass rushing skills and his ability to get to the quarterback should help his chances at earning a roster spot.

My NFL Comparison: Oakland Raiders outside linebacker Khalil Mack. Why Mack? Both Mack and Howsare have similar skill sets, explosive and both know how to get to the quarterback.

Bottom Line: Howsare is a major contributor who will do anything to help his team. Coaches will love his versatile and his strong work ethic. Can easily make it an NFL team’s final 53 roster.
