Overview: Deneco Hathorn is a senior who plays football for Concordia College. He is a great athlete who can play multiple positions on defense such as cornerback and safety. He also has the ability to play slot receiver and the ability to contribute on special teams. He has great awareness, displays good ball skills, and has great coverage at the cornerback and the safety position.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Deneco, during which he told me more about his background, his personality and his overall love for football.
Christa: For the people who do not know your story, how did you wind up choosing Concordia College?
Deneco Hathorn: I was a two-year juco starter, was recruited by small d1 schools such as troy, Memphis etc, but because of grades I had considered fcs and committed to d1aa Jackson state univ. But, I was ineligible still so I chose d2 Concordia instead of sitting out.
C: Since you are from a smaller school, how do you plan on making yourself stand out and noticed by scouts?
DH: I have recently signed with an agent to get my name out more, and i’m preparing to run a fast forty somewhere in the 4.35-4.49 range to catch more eyes, and i’m doing field workouts daily working on technique and hips for my pro day and combine!
C: What would you say are your strengths and weaknesses?
DH: My strength is my speed, great ball skills, fluid hips, and physical press man technique my only weakness would be my height at only 5’9
C: There has been smaller cornerbacks in the NFL that have started and have done extremely well in the league such as Darrelle Revis, Joe Hayden, Brent Grimes, etc. How do you match up against the taller more physical wide receivers?
DH: I think that my ball skills, speed and technique and instincts will make up for what i lack in height, and I’m in the weightroom a lot to gain strength to help.
C: As I watch your tape, I noticed that you are versatile on defense. Are there any other positions you play?
DH: I can play free safety and slot receiver as well as kick returner
C: Is there a specific player that you try to model your game after?
DH: I love to watch Brent Grimes play and I try to do the things he does as far as workouts to get the results he does!
C: Which current or former NFL player do you think you resemble and why?
DH: I think I resemble Nickel Robey of the Buffalo Bills, we are both shorter corners but we are physical, and [have] great coverage ability and are not afraid of any receiver regardless of size.
C: How do you prepare for game day? Do you have any game day rituals?
DH: I listen to Kevin Gates and I watch Brent Grimes and Janoris Jenkins highlights
C: If could be any superhero who would it be and why?
DH: I would be Hulk, because he destroys everything in the way!
C: What was your favorite moment/play at Concordia College?
DH: My favorite play at Concordia I would say would be my interception for td for 65 yards against Stillman College!
