Overview: Kyle Washington was a senior who played quarterback for Angelo State University. He is a duel-threat quarterback who has a good arm and knows how to use his feet in order to gain more yardage. During his junior year, he made history by being the only quarterback in his college to ever throw for over 3,000 yards in a season, breaking their passing yards record. He was also one of the players to be nominated for the Harlon Hill trophy. During his career, he had 86 touchdowns and 9,587 passing yards. He also had 433 rushing attempts for 2,670 and 28 touchdowns.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Kyle, during which time he told me more about his background, his personality and his overall love for football.
Christa: For the people who do not know your story, how did you wind up choosing Angelo State University?
KW: Angelo State University was one of the few schools that gave me the opportunity to continue to play football. I fell in love with the school, coaches, players, and community; and I believe I made the most out of my opportunities while attending Angelo State University.
C: Since you are from a smaller school, how do you plan on making yourself stand out and noticed by scouts?
KW: I plan on continuing to hone my skills and train for my pro day on March 28. I view this as my last opportunity to showcase my capabilities as a professional football player.
C: What would you say are your strengths and weaknesses?
KW: I believe that my strengths include knowledge of the game, instincts, poise, athleticism and ability to anticipate. I believe my weaknesses include not setting my feet at times and putting too much trust in my arm.
C: What separates you from the other players at your position?
KW: One thing that I think that separates me from other players is the chip on my shoulder. I always view myself as the underdog and I believe that allows me to play at a higher level.
C: Which current or former NFL player do you think you resemble and why?
KW: In regards to build and athletic potential, I believe former Eagles Quarterback Randall Cunningham is a fair comparison.
C: What pressures are there during games to complete plays/succeed. How do you deal with these pressures?
KW: No pressure. Pressure is what you create internally.
C: Who is the toughest player you’ve ever faced in your college career?
KW: Ethan Westbrooks
C: How do you prepare for game day? Do you have any game day rituals?
KW: Not a “ritual”, but I anoint myself with anointing oil prior to every game.
C: What is the most inspirational or powerful thing a coach has ever said to you in your college career?
KW: Two things you can control; attitude and effort.
C: What was your favorite moment/play at Angelo State University?
KW: Finishing a game winning drive by throwing a touchdown to my good friend Trey Green with 0:11 seconds left in the game.
