LRU Spotlight: Follow-up Interview with Jonathan Rijo of the Sydney Express

Overview: Jonathan Rijo is a versatile offensive lineman who can tackle and guard. He started off his college career at Bethany College in Kansas before transferring to Lincoln University of Pennsylvania. He recently signed with the Sydney Express. The Sydney Express is a professional team in Australia, where football lasts eight months. This league was launched to give more football players a chance to live their dreams. They aim to recruit talented football players internationally.


I had the pleasure of doing a follow up interview with Jonathan, during which time he told me about his exciting opportunity with the Sydney Express, his accomplishments, and his goals oversee.

C: How did you get recruited/chosen to play for the Sydney Express?

JR: I was recruited by Head coach Richard Bonds via I recommend the site for any player looking for a chance to play football overseas.

C: How was the process of being chosen like?

JR: It was extremely stressful, for the simple fact I wanted to make the best possible first career move. After the conversation I had with coach Bonds I felt confident in his vision, and I knew right then and there I was making the best possible move for my future.

C: How does it feel to be signed to the Sydney Express and playing football professionally?

JR: It is truly a dream come true. I feel beyond blessed, and I am also very thankful in getting the opportunity from the Sydney Express organization.

C: You have mentioned that you have been inducted into the Pioneer Football league Hall of Fame. That’s a huge honor. What was your reaction?

JR: I was beyond honored for receiving such a great award. It was truly priceless, and I would like to thank league commissioner David Patterson for selecting me. I am beyond proud to join the PFL Hall of Fame. The league has grown a great deal, and is headed in the right direction.

C: In Australia, football season is 8 months, which is much longer than seasons in the United States. Are you excited to play more football overseas?

JR: You could never get enough football. The weather is going to be great, the level of play is going to be elite. I am beyond excited to play overseas.

C: What are some of the goals you would like to achieve with the Sydney Express?

JR: One obvious goal is to win. Win the inaugural National Gridiron League championship. Make everyone around me better, and be a leader on the offensive line. Overall I want to be the best I can be at everything I do, and represent my family, the Sydney Express and the National Gridiron League to the best of my abilities.
