Overview: Ray Buchanan Jr. started off playing for Arkansas before transferring to University of Northern Iowa. He is a senior cornerback who also played on special teams for University of Northern Iowa. He has a great football I.Q. and great speed at the position. His father, Ray Buchanan, was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in 1993 in the 3rd round of the NFL Draft. He was a 2-time All-Pro in 1994 and 1998 and also made the Pro-Bowl in 1998.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Ray, during which time he told me more about his background, his personality and his overall love for football.
Christa: For the people who do not know your story, how did you wind up choosing University of Northern Iowa?
RBJ: After getting my release from Arkansas, I spoke to Brandon Lynch (Secondary Coach at UNI) and he got me there for a visit and I saw opportunity to be great.
C: How do you plan on making yourself stand out and noticed by NFL scouts?
RBJ: Stay consistent and making plays in practice and on game day. I set standards for myself as well as leading others so we all succeed.
C: What would you say are your strengths and weaknesses?
RBJ: Coach Lynch says I have NFL hips. I think being around my dad and great coaches at UNI made my football IQ very strong. I’m quick and press man coverage is my favorite. No weaknesses here.
C: What separates you from the other players at your position?
RBJ: I think my discipline, and respect for coaches and play making ability.
C: Which current or former NFL player do you think you resemble and why?
RBJ: Former my dad and Ronde Barber, my pops was always around the ball and Ronde technique was always sharp.
C: Who is the toughest player you’ve ever faced in your college career?
RBJ: Toughest WR is at practice day in and day out my teammate Daurice Fountain. Iron sharpens iron.
C: When did you first fall in love with playing football?
RBJ: I started playing football when I was 6. I think I fell in love with the game before I started playing, my mom always said I was so excited to start playing.
C: How do you prepare for game day? Do you have any game day rituals?
RBJ: I’ll eat a light pre game meal, I like to stay relaxed. I will pray before I put the pads on. Then listen to my favorite rap/hip-hop artist.
C: What is the most inspirational or powerful thing a coach has ever said to you in your college career?
RBJ: Coach Bryce Paup (D-Line Coach at UNI) told me before a game to never be afraid to make mistakes. Just go out there and give it all I got, so that after there will be no doubt. It clicked ever since.
C: As you prepare for the 2017 Draft, what are your goals for your final year of college?
RBJ: All American, Lead Conference in INT’s, break UNI’s pick 6 record.
