LRU Spotlight: Interview with 2017 NFL Draft Prospect, D’Vonta Derricott

Overview: D’Vonta Derricott is a senior who plays linebacker. He started his career at Garden City Community College, Kansas State, and Eastern Kentucky before transferring to Arkansas Tech. In 2013, he had 67 tackles, 9 tackles for a loss, 1 sack, and 3 interceptions and 4 pass breakups. He was ranked as ESPN’S 3rd best junior college outside linebacker in the nation. During his time at Eastern Kentucky, he had 29 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, 1 interception and 4 pass breakups. He is a great athlete who has great speed and is very physical.

I had the pleasure of interviewing D’Vonta, during which time he told me more about his background, his personality and his overall love for football.

C: For the people who do not know your story, how did you wind up choosing Arkansas Tech?

DD: I chose Arkansas Tech because I graduated and they had a great season.

C: How do you plan on making yourself stand out and noticed by NFL scouts?

DD: By making plays and making sacks. 5 sacks is the goal.

C: What would you say are your strengths and weaknesses?

DD: Strengths: Sideline to sideline speed
Weakness: Pads leveled down

C: What separates you from the other players at your position?

DD: I’m faster than most linebackers. I am a playmaker.

C: Which current or former NFL player do you think you resemble and why?

DD: I would have to say John Beason who played for the New York Giants. We are both really fast and physical.

C: Who is the toughest player you’ve ever faced in your college career?

DD: Nick Marshall who is now on the Jacksonville Jaguars.

C: When did you first fall in love with playing football?

DD: When I was 4 years old.

C: How do you prepare for game day? Do you have any game day rituals?

DD: Reading the Bible.

C: What is the most inspirational or powerful thing a coach has ever said to you in your college career?

DD: That’s I am an NFL prospect. It is my decision making.

C: As you prepare for the 2017 Draft, what are your goals for your final year of college?

DD: By making plays. My goal is to make All-American and All-Conference.
