Overview: Roderick Henderson is a red shirt senior who is a nose tackle. He started his college career at Southern Mississippi before transferring to Alabama State University. He is an explosive player and a great blocker. He will play in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in January.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Roderick, during which time he told me more about his background, his personality and his overall love for football.
C: For the people who do not know your story, how did you wind up choosing Alabama State?
RH: I went to Southern Mississippi after graduating High School, I was there for a year and a half and then I had the opportunity to go to Alabama State University, which was great since Montgomery is my hometown.
C: How do you plan on making yourself stand out and noticed by NFL scouts?
RH: My plan is to make a new line of scrimmage every play, beating every single block, and creating double team blocks; I’m committed to being the best player I can be and I know it will involve a lot of hard work but I’m sure I can stand out and make a great impression on the NFL scouts with my strategy.
C: What would you say are your strengths and weaknesses?
RH: I believe my quickness is one of my strongest attributes, explosiveness off the ball and my point of attack. As for my weakness that would be my stamina, which is something I’m working on.
C: What separates you from the other players at your position?
RH: My dominance and ability to take on double team blocks, a lot of DT’s don’t like to take on those, I like to work hard and make no excuses when it comes to playing my position.
C: Which current or former NFL player do you think you resemble and why?
RH: I like to think I resemble Vince Wilfork and Damon Harrison, my ability to clog up wholes resembles Vince and my get off resembles Harrison.
C: When did you first fall in love with playing football?
RH: I started playing football when I was 7 years old, I just remember my first practice being so much fun, I fell in love with the game almost immediately, I like having competitive fun.
C: Who is the toughest player you’ve ever faced in your college career?
RH: I honestly don’t remember anybody being the toughest, but when I played Kentucky the center and guard combo was very nice, it was fun to play against them and I had 3 tackles for loss that game.
C: How do you prepare for game day? Do you have any game day rituals?
RH: On game days I like to watch highlights of Damon Harrison, Vince Wilford, and Nick Fairley. My only ritual is to listen to music that gets me going.
C: What is the most inspirational or powerful thing a coach has ever said to you in your college career?
RH: “You only can control what you can control.” – Coach McNeil
C: What should people reading this interview know about you?
RH: I’m a beast and the best nose tackle in the 2017 draft!
