LRU Spotlight: Interview with 2017 NFL Draft Prospect, Devonte Mathis

Height: 6’1
Weight: 221

Overview: Devonte Mathis is a red-shirt senior who was a wide receiver and also contributed on special teams for West Virginia University. He has good hands and is a good route runner.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Devonte, during which time he told me more about his background, his personality and his overall love for football.

C: For the people who do not know your story, how did you wind up choosing West Virginia University?

DM: I chose West Virginia because I fell in love with the atmosphere and the fans. What really sealed the deal for me was my friends and fellow Miramar high school alum Geno Smith, Ivan McCartney, Josh Taylor and Stedman Bailey.

C: How do you plan on making yourself stand out and noticed by NFL scouts?

DM: I plan on showing off my combination of size and athleticism. I want to display numbers and ability that you expect from a smaller player.

C: What would you say are your strengths and weaknesses?

Route running
Good hands

C: What separates you from the other players at your position?

DM: I feel that I’m stronger than the average receiver and even with my size I can run by defenders.

C: Would you consider yourself more of a speedster type wide receiver or a possession type wide receiver?

DM: Possession.

C: Which current or former NFL player do you think you resemble and why?

DM: Anquan Boldin and Delanie Walker.

C: Who is the toughest player you’ve ever faced in your college career?

DM: Karl Joseph.

C: How do you prepare for game day? Do you have any game day rituals?

DM: I always pray, listen to 90’s hip hop and R&B.

C: What is the most inspirational or powerful thing a coach has ever said to you in your college career?

DM: “Winners are not people who never fail but people who never quit.”

C: What should people reading this interview know about you?

DM: I live by these 3 things
